Idlewild Celebrates Freedom For ALL

June 20, 2015

Saturday, June 20, marked the 2nd annual Idlewild Juneteenth Festival, hosted by Historical Idlewild Tours, LLC. and co-supported by DANCE, Inc., and the Idlewild Chamber of Commerce. Company CEO Micala Evans, originally envisioned the Juneteenth celebration in Idlewild as a way to promote culture and history in the historic African American community. Growing up in Idlewild, Evans often grew frustrated with the lack of continued actvities and opportunities for the youth. Juneteenth became the first African cultural heritage festival to be open to the public on a large scale in the community, making a powerful political statement. HITS aims to hold the festival right after school gets out, providing a free, cultural, family oriented activity to local residents, and to increase opportunities for youth and seniors to interact, communicate, and bond. We are always seeking corporate sponsors and donations for the event. Check out our video of the 2015 Festival, produced by an Idlewild native Andrea Billow of DnA productions.
